Common Scalp Infections
Even in First World countries, infections by fungi, bacteria and lice
collectively known as dermatophytes - are fairly common. These
organisms are transferred quite easily through personal contact and
shared towels, bedding and clothing.
Scalp ringworm, or
tinea capitis
One of the most common scalp infections is scalp ringworm, or
tinea capitis. This fungal infection causes itchy, circular patches on the
skin and can lead to some hair loss. It is easily spread - not only on
combs or brushes but even on furniture. Ringworm, which mostly
affects children, can be treated with antifungals and lost hair generally grows back once the infection is under control.
Head lice (pediculosis capitis or pediculosis)
Head lice (pediculosis capitis or pediculosis) identified by an itchy
scalp and eggs attached to hair roots - are transmitted through contact with clothes and grooming tools. Infection has nothing to do with
hygiene, dirty hair or personal grooming habits. In fact, lice love long,
clean hair! Although treatments are available, studies suggest lice are
becoming resistant to the products. Experts believe that removal using
a nit comb is still the most effective.
