Vintage hairstyles are all about glamour and sophistication.  Curls and waves is the main fashion. Vintage hairstyles give a sexy and feminine effect. Locks are styled elegantly.

1930's Vintage Hairstyles

1930's coiffure was defined by short waved hair. Hair was mostly shoulder length or at chin. Using brimmed hats and small hats can also complete the look.  Hats are sometimes placed diagonally. Curls, whatever size, are placed firmly and closely to the head. Hair is also pulled back, arrange into small curls secured with hair or bobby pins. Finger Wave, Water Wave, Brush Curling and Windblown are some these hairstyles. Finger Wave is described as a wave that makes sharp fold at a finger interval. Water Wave is formed by putting comb upward in the wet hair, so when it dries and combs are removed, it will result in a natural wave. A curl that is made by tight winding wet hair strands in overlapped curls, securely pinned to the scalp is called a Brush Curling. While in windblown, hair is combed on a slant and the waves form a heart-shape. Saucer Wave and Sculptor Wave are some of the famous vintage hair styles.

Saucer Wave is as the name implies is a wave forms a circle beginning in the front.  The inside circle is the smallest.  And there were waves that begin from the forehead down the nape with cluster of curls over the ear. This is known as Sculptor Wave. These styles are featured in Vogue.

1940's Vintage Hairstyles

Vintage Hairstyle in the 1940's is chic. The famous hairstyle is the Chignon. It is simple and at the same time elegant. The chignon look is a bun at the nape. Omelet fold and Do Rags are also a forties hairstyle.

1950's Vintage Hairstyles

Romantic and natural is the hairstyle in 1950's. It got glam, ponytail became popular. French Plait and Poodle cut was in vogue. The hairstyling was more detailed and elaborate. Women also wear their hair short but loose. They wore bangs which are also curled. Bouffant is another hairstyle which they use hairsprays for.  Beehive is one vintage hairstyle that is very elaborate. It is an up do which is chic, sleek and worn with evening gowns.

While for men duck hairstyle was famous. Also known as duck butt. Hair is combed back with lots of grease forming a duck's butt at the backside of the head. Men and women today find these vintage hairstyles as an inspiration for their own look. With a touch of modern techniques and accessories, these look can be recreated as trendy vintage hairstyles of today.
