Medieval Hairstyles

When you look in our history, you can see that even in the earlier era women already have their own concept of style and beauty. The evidence shows that some of the earlier women, especially those belonging in high society, took care of their hair and fashion. They even use different material as accessories for their hair. For example Ancient Egyptians used comb and hairpin on their tresses and Ancient Greeks uses calamistrum to reshape their hair.

Popular Medieval Hairstyles

The Medieval Era hairstyle was highly influenced by religious beliefs and witchcrafts. Braids were often worn by women and were the most popular style on the said era. These braids are often pulled back in the back of the head and gathered together in a bun.

Social classes can also be determined by the hairstyle a person is sporting. Upper class women wore their hair long and with loose curls. They sometimes adorn the ends of their hair with golden balls. Noble women, on the other hand, covered their hair with flat bonnet or gold thread and ribbons. While, lower classes women simply wore their hair shorter and they don't put any decorations in it.

During the Medieval era, when church ordered that married women should cover their hair; bonnets, veil and hats became popular. The cone shape hat with veil was commonly worn during wedding and special events. Sometimes hair are parted in the middle and gathered together on both sides in a mound, either braided or not. During the same era, high forehead is considered beautiful for women. That is why some women shaved their hair to heighten their hairline and then decorated it with pearls and gemstones.

Today, these medieval hairstyles can also be recreated and change to fit more modern hairstyles. Most celebrities sport a modernized medieval hairstyle in the red carpet. Even ordinary women wore these styles during special occasions and weddings.

To recreate your own medieval hairstyle, start by parting your hair in the middle and apply few drops of shine serum. Then braid one side of the parted hair, start in the middle part of your forehead up to the back of your head. Secure it tightly using a hairpin or clip. Do the same on the other side of the hair. Then gather both end of the braid and roll it in a bun. Lastly fastened the bun securely with hairpins and decorate it with ribbons, beads or even with gold threads. If your hair is longer instead of gathering the ends in a bun, you can let it hung in loose curls.

Hairstyle evolves and revolves, what is in decades ago can be in today. We just change it a bit; mellow it down or dress it up to make it fit a modern hair style and life style.
